About Me

I have just been awarded a First Class BA (Hons) Applied Creative Design (Textiles) where I specialised in Embroidery. I was fortunate to be awarded a Madeira threads sponsorship and a bursary by the City of York branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild. My final project created a range of fabrics for interiors, based on a theme of seed heads, with a common theme of cutwork to allow the fabrics to be used as window panels letting varying amounts of light through.

I work in a variety of textile techniques and use hand embroidery, feltmaking, goldwork, printing and dyeing in my work. My main passion, however, remains free machine embroidery. Technically my work is often very detailed and precise.

Alongside my degree I completed a Community Arts Work qualification, and have worked with children and adults in a variety of settings, mostly teaching textile based workshops. I plan to extend this work now I have completed my degree.

Prior to my degree, I studied for an HNC in Textiles and on completion became one of the founding members of ‘Diverse Threads’ – an exhibiting group of textile artists that meet regularly in the York area. With Diverse Threads, I create thought-provoking pieces of work which explore contemporary concerns. Inspiration is often drawn from the local environment, and recent pieces have considered the effect mankind has had on the natural landscape. I use colour and texture to stir memories of particular places and experiences. In all instances, my overriding aim is to elicit a reaction from the viewer.
